ESL01 Developing Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity
Course Description: As U.S. communities grow more diverse, this course helps educators develop cultural competence to overcome language and cultural barriers in schools. It covers multicultural behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes, along with strategies for working with English learners. Participants explore cultural awareness activities, cross-cultural conflicts, and conflict resolution relevant to K-12 classrooms and communities.
ESL02 Language Acquisition
Course Description: This course is designed for teachers or future teachers of English Language Learners. Educators taking this course will develop knowledge and skills in the areas of structure of the English language, grammar, and pronunciation, including lexical, morphological, syntax, phonological and pragmatic components. Educators taking this course will develop knowledge of the process of first and second language acquisition, including developmental issues in verbal, non-verbal skills, and vocabulary. They will also develop knowledge and skills to assist ELLs to communicate using verbal and non-verbal language
ESL03 Literacy Acquisition
Course Description: This course helps educators understand how English learners (ELLs) develop literacy in a second language and how to support them at different stages. Teachers will explore the five key components of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension), learn differentiated writing strategies, and apply effective techniques to improve literacy for both ELLs and native English speakers in K-12.
ESL04 Observing and Planning Instruction to ELL Students
Course Description: English Language Learners (ELLs) arrive in our classrooms with diverse backgrounds and varying levels of language proficiency. It is essential for ESL teachers to have the knowledge and skills to design developmentally appropriate curricula that support all learners. This course equips educators with the tools to create effective, inclusive ESL programs tailored to meet the unique needs of each student. By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement customized ESL instruction and identify appropriate materials and resources for students at every stage of English language development.
ESL05 Implementing and Managing Instruction to ELL Students
Course Description: This 3-credit course is designed for teachers of English Language Learners. Because ELL students come to us with a variety of backgrounds and at diverse levels of language acquisition, it is important for ESL teachers to have the knowledge and skills necessary to implement and revise a developmentally appropriate curricular program for all students. Upon completion of this course, teachers will be expected to be able to: implement and revise an ESL program tailored to meet the needs of each student. Participants will be able to modify and employ appropriate materials and resources to be used with children at each level of English Proficiency.
ESL06 Assessing ESL Students
Course Description: Assessing ELL Students is a 3-credit (45-hour) course that deepens your understanding of effective assessment strategies for English language learners. You’ll explore assessment purposes, models, and tools—both formal and informal—along with techniques like scaffolding and evaluation. The course also covers support services, family engagement, and considerations for ELLs with special education needs, with hands-on experience in test administration and reporting.
